Like most homebrewers, this craft began as a hobby on the kitchen stove using a 5 gallon pot & an extract kit. Unlike most homebrewers, this story involved a wife who was neverendingly pregnant and hated the smell. Surprisingly, my first beer was a success-a brown ale that I actually enjoyed! Of course I immediately wanted to brew more. The process and science behind brewing was exciting to me. And drinking a beer I had created myself was the best part!Shortly after the homebrewing began, our son was born, and he quickly earned the title “Monster”. Anyone who knew Jamie & I growing up was not surprised by his ability to reign terror and chaos on the regular. But brewing with Monster was fairly simple. Kitchen, Playpen, Nap, Brew, Done. And so the home brewery nickname “Monster Brewing” was born. A year later our first daughter was born, changing the brewery’s name to “3 Monsters Brewing”. Wait…3? Well since Jamie already had a 3rd baby “brewing” we just skipped ahead.
My passion for brewing was growing as fast as our family. And with perfect timing, a local homebrew shop opened minutes from our house. The good part was I now had somewhere to buy endless brewing equipment and ingredients, plus a group of people who also loved homebrew with vast knowledge to share. The bad part was after a combined 27 months pregnant, Jamie said GET THIS SHIT OUT OF MY KITCHEN. That was the green light to switch to all-grain brewing and upgrade the equipment (thanks Jamie) as I now had the entire garage to expand my brewery. More brew days, more beers, bigger batches. This is great right?
Queue the birth of our 4th child, and nope it’s not “4 Monsters Brewing”. It’s zero monsters brewing because the brewing came to a halt. Time was limited and life was crazy. Our parenting approach evolved from a double team, to man coverage, to a zone defense, to a prevent defense. It was constant madness. After a year of not brewing, I almost gave up and sold my barely used equipment. But as the newborn stages ended, (and Jamie could FINALLY drink again), we began enjoying craft beer together once again. This sparked the addiction to brewing and it was time to dust off the equipment. Once I got back into the swing of things, I was getting great feedback from friends and family. But I wanted unbiased opinions on my beers, so I joined the AHA and began entering samples into an array of competitions across multiple states. It felt great to win medals, but more importantly the feedback I received was making me a better brewer, crafting better beers. While attending the AHA National Homebrew Competition & Convention in Minneapolis, it was finally decided. We had to pursue this passion together and take it to the next level. We had to start our own brewery!
So we put a plan together, and for the first time I was told, “Brew, brew as much as you can, and as often as possible!” -Wife. And after perfecting our flagship beers, we needed a way to produce more. “We need to get our beers out there! Make more!” -Wife. “I love this woman” -Me. I decided it was time to go electric, after all I am an electrician right? And I can’t ever seem to stop building things. So time to build a 100% electric brewery. I wanted to ensure consistency, and be able to produce more quantity without compromising quality. How I sold it to Jamie- “This would be a great investment if and when we go pro!”
Now we needed a big name to match our beers. Tiring of changing “Monsters Brewing” so many times, (plus it’s kind of already trademarked by a larger Monster company), we attempted to incorporate the madness of our house into one idea. And since this is where all the madness has hatched from, that became our name. We cannot thank everyone enough for all the love and support they have given us. It feels amazing when someone truly believes in your dream. Our journey has brought us this far, and we hope to continue to evolve our craft and love of beer brewing into our own taproom one day. So from our madness to yours, Cheers!!! We’ll see you in the taproom!
Beer. You like it. We brew it. Let’s drink it.
